About The Wood Family Foundation

Begun in 2011 by Chicago Cubs pitcher, Kerry Wood and his wife, Sarah, the Wood Family Foundation (WFF) works to improve the lives of children in Chicago. The WFF acts as an advocate for children in the Chicago community, inspiring others to join them in their mission.

All of our programs and activities are based on the belief that a child’s potential should never be underestimated and that building long-standing relationships with children and their families are the best way to nurture that potential. That’s why the Wood Family Foundation prides itself on providing support, not just on a one-time basis, but through long-term relationships with kids and their communities, ensuring the consistency and emotional structure they need to succeed.

Our Mission

Despite the curveballs that may come their way, everyone should be given a chance in life regardless of resources or geography. The Wood Family Foundation facilitates relationships that provide support and opportunities to empower youth and their families to succeed in life.

All kids deserve a shot at a successful future. If we all pitch in, they’ll get there.

Wood Family Foundation Programs

Pitch In Mentoring Program

The Pitch In after school mentoring program is a cohort-based, group mentoring program based in the North Lawndale neighborgood. It is designed to offer unique learning experiences and opportunities for personal growth to students in 4th through 8th grades. By focusing on the core competencies of social-emotional learning, we aim to help our young people thrive in their personal lives, their family lives, and their school lives.

The Kerry & Sarah Wood Family Foundation Scholarship

The Wood Family Foundation is proud to continue our WFF Scholarship Program in partnership with the University of Illinois-Chicago Honors College. This program supports deserving college students from one of our four target neighborhoods. Each participating student receives a full four-year scholarship covering all college expenses including tuition, books, room, and board.

Our scholarship program is a part of the larger UIC’s President’s Award Honors Scholarship Program which targets exceptional students from families who are unable to provide funding for college expenses and who reside in “challenged” neighborhoods. This program requires that students live on campus and surrounds them with additional mentoring and support that drastically increases their likelihood of success. In addition to providing financial support, WFF staff stay in contact with our participating scholars throughout the year to offer additional support.

Our inaugural scholar, Gabriella Santoyo, began her junior year in 2015 and is majoring in Finance.

Our second scholar, Marla Stamps, began her freshman year in 2015.
